When companies deal with harmful substances that can affect the soil, calamities can occur. Therefore, an impermeable layer must be installed to protect the soil and groundwater.

Part of Preem AB's existing tank farm is located in the former port of Norrköping in Sweden. A lot of settlement has already occurred in this reclamed area and further significant settlement can be expected in the coming years. Given this fact, finding a suitable soil seal was a challenge.

Due to its high plastic properties, Trisoplast® is very suitable for settlement-sensitive soils. A characteristic very important for settlement within landfills (from where Trisoplast originates), which is now also very helpful in industry. Easy and quick installation and making simple and robust connections to the various structures were also advantages that made Preem AB decide to choose Trisoplast. In addition, the high chemical resistance to oils, diesel, acetone etc and the fact that no cracking would occur in the event of drying out were unique properties that were also important to Preem AB. Not only the (horizontal) tank floor was coated with Trisoplast but also the bundwalls (ramps). This provided sufficient safe liquid-dense buffer capacity in the event of an emergency.

Logistics

For the first phase, the client opted to deliver a ready-to-use Trisoplast mixture (720 big bags) from the Netherlands instead of mixing it on site. Storage of the big bags was easily achieved on site. A local contractor carried out the installation of the Trisoplast under our supervision. Advantage is also that the existing bund soil can be reused in the new design, also in case this soil is more or less contaminated (and local authorities allow this project specific re-use).

Cooperation

Preems project team and their engineering firm, Integra, were introduced to the capabilities of Trisoplast during a visit to Dutch Projects. The design was then made in close consultation. This collaboration continued with the local contractor. During the installation process, our technicians instructed and guided the local contractor.  Resulting in a durable and safe end result.
