Our colleague and main landfill gas engineer, Dennis Zegers, participated in the project team for the article “The impact of landfill management approaches on methane emissions”.
This article was published in the internationally prestigious research magazine Waste Management & Research last month. The article shows how management approaches influence methane emissions from landfills.
Various landfill scenarios for different regions of the planet were created. Based on model analyses in line with IPCC recommendations, two options appeared most effective methane mitigation measures: (a) early gas recovery and (b) reduction of biodegradable organic waste in a landfill.
Policymakers and regulators can significantly reduce adverse impacts from landfill gas by stimulating early capture and flaring and/or energy recovery of landfill gas and programmes to reduce the inflow of organic waste into landfills.
It was great and an honour to contribute to and cooperate with this highly professional, global project team and to reach such clear conclusions.
